Trades for 2-27-09, and weekly total

Sorry about having to post this a day late, I was up untill 1:00am trying to get the "MA Trading" video to work.

For the week I’m breakeven (-.03%), and I’m so glad I tightened my stoploss in SDS (discretionary) today. If I had not tightened my stop I’d be down 1%-1.50%. Other than that, not much else to say so have a good weekend.

For my Friday post I made a video of how I trade the “MA Trading”. I tried to explain it the best I could, but if you have comments/questions please post in the comments section of this blog or in the video on youtube. Click here for the video of how the “MA Trading" works

I also have a chart of how the “MA Trading” has been doing:

Trades for 2-26-09

Originally my stop in ALTR was about 1%, but I knew it was going to head down so I adjusted and wound up having to stomach a 2.07% drawdown before I finally took my profits. Other than that it was just a paper-trade in SDS, and some practicing in forex. It’s looking like I may need to change the way I do forex, because when I’m getting gains they are small. I may just try boosting the trade size and see how that goes.

Trades for 2-25-09

Made some money today, and made some changes to what I'm trading. From now on I will be doing my normal thing in the morning (gap trade, then a real morning trade), then instead of discretionary paper trading I will paper-trade forex until the close. I will try to get a discretionary paper-trade in, but my main focous will be forex.

Trades for 2-24-09

Sorry for the late post, I was installing some new software on my computer :).

Today was an unlucky day for me. See today’s trading video for why I traded my 2nd trade for real. After my 2nd trade I had to clear my head, so I took off to go ice-fishing at 12pmEST, and didn’t get back until market close.

Trades for 2-23-09

Please call your representatives and tell them to vote NO on the “Trader tax” (click here for the full text of the bill)!!! All that tax is going to do is hurt us little guys who are trying to make a living trading. I’d like to thank Dinosaur Trader for bringing it to my attention in his post yesterday.

Had a good morning, but the rest of the day sucked so I’m glad I’m still paper-trading the rest of the day.

Trades for 2-20-09, and weekly total

I ended the week -2.03%, and my biggest bummer this week was my loss on 2-18-09. The total this week would have been -1.03% if I could have gotten the stop I wanted that day.

I found a problem with my trading yesterday, and today. I discovered that I’ve been making my picks wrong, instead of looking for what’s likely to happen I’ve been looking to just make a trade (see today’s trading video for an example). I also had a 2nd real trade today in XLF. I saw the big run we had and it looked like a top, so I went for a quick profit on the 1 minute chart.

For my Friday post I have a funny video for you, which I stole from The Denarii Trader:

Trades for 2-19-09

Today went better, I just wish I had stuck with my original stopgain in my 1st (real) trade. After entering the trade I should have had the mindset of waiting for something to prove me wrong instead of 2nd guessing it, and looking for more proof that I was correct in my entry.

Just in case you didn’t read my post yesterday, the “Gapers” are now trading the open of the index only (no stocks).

Sometime in the near future (maybe this weekend) I plan on doing videos of how I trade, and will post them in my daily post as they are completed.

Trades for 2-18-09

Had a nice discussion about my trading with my dad today. In our talk I came up with a few things I need to start doing. The 1st was I should stop gap trading stocks in the morning and just gap trade the indexes (if they gap or have a big red/green bar on the open), 2nd I need to continue doing my morning trade, 3rd is to adjust my during the day discretionary trading, and the 4th being I will also discretionary trade during the last hour of the day. I will also continue doing my moving average and 10k trades like normal.

My trade this morning officially SUCKED! My original stop was $86.84 (-.89%) but the price moved to quick for me to get out there, so I had to take the price I got :(. Same thing applied to my MA trade, had my stop and couldn’t get it so I took what I could.

Trades for 2-17-09

I’m back form Arizona, and man that was a long road trip! Took us 16 hours to get down there, and on the way back it took 14 hours. We drove about 700-800 miles each way, so it was about 1400-1600 miles round trip. Overall it was a great trip, and I had a blast. Here are some photos from the trip:

I didn’t get home last night until 2:30amMST then woke up at 8:30amMST (late) to trade. That was a mistake, because in my tiredness I entered DDM too late. Thankfully I was able to hang on all day long for a break even :). I decided not to do a trading video for today because I’m tired, and only had the one trade in DDM.

Trades for 2-13-09, and weekly total

My total for the week (2-9-09 to 2-13-09) is (+1.65%).

I’m happy with this week overall, but today’s trading could have been better. I almost went long in the DJIA (long DDM) at 10:01amEST this morning, but we were in a trading range and I don’t like trading within a range like that (see today’s trading video). That wasn’t a big deal though, it was my trade in DOG that was the problem. I should have traded SDS, but I went for DOG because it had a smaller stoploss (out of fear). If I had gone for SDS I would have made about +.85% today. Not much else for me to say today other than I’m off this weekend to AZ for my sister’s baptism, so I’ll see you on Tuesday.

For my Friday post I have a video for you. In it the guy talks about trading forex, but everything he says applies to stock trading also:

Trades for 2-11-09

Sorry the post is late today, but I was having a nice long talk on skype with orionmachine and some of his viewers. It was a great chat, and I hope we do it again sometime :). I also had problems with uploading today's trading video, but it's all fixed now.

After talking with orionmachine today it got me thinking about posting my actual dollar figures. Even though they don’t reflect my actual account value (the percentage is based off the stock price, not my account value), it makes me uncomfortable posting actual dollar figures on the internet. So I decided to no longer post my dollar figures, I hope you all understand :). Other then that it’s just a dull, and boring numbers day for you :P.

Trades for 2-10-09

I finally had a stock trade today (incase you haven’t noticed, all I’ve been trading lately has been ETFs)! When the DJIA broke support at 8200 it scared me for a second because I didn’t know how HNZ was going to react. I’m glad I stuck with my rule of not basing individual stock entries/exits on how the index is behaving. My big gain in SDS (discretionary) was pure luck. I just happened to buy it on a “normal” trade and before I could place my stopgain it shot up so I took profits @ $75.98. I almost went for $76.48, but once the bar closed I decided not to be greedy.

Trades for 2-6-09, and weekly total

I have decided to start posting a weekly (every friday) random video, interesting link/article, or my own take on the market on a daily chart. For this week I have a link to a site that has the unemployment rate going back to 1948. I find it encouraging that the unemployment rate is only hitting 1992 levels, but I’m still looking for it to peak at about 8%-10%. However, it would be most encouraging if the unemployment rate decelerates month over month going forward.

Click here for unemployment data going back to 1948.

Now for the numbers:
My total for the week (2-2-09 to 2-6-09) is (+.41%) or (+$99.15).

I’m glad to see the market going up even after an unemployment rate that wasn’t favorable. Today I decided to try going with the trend, which is something I haven’t done in a while. I exited my trade in DDM where I did because we closed below resistance, and had a tall wick on the 10M candle in the DJIA. I almost wish I had just ignored the rules, but I couldn’t. My original stopgain was $28.14 (+1.12%), but I would have likely taken profits at $28.08 (+.90%).

Trades for 2-5-09

This morning was weird. I was only expecting a pull back in the DJIA to about 7900, but it decided to blast off. Then the market set up for a nice short, so I shorted the DJIA (long DOG) and wound up being stopped out. My only regret for today is that I only got about ¾ of my shares at my stopout in DOG, the rest were exited lower than I wanted.
