Trades for 12-30-08

So far the decision to open my opportunities has worked. Also, I don’t think I’ll be doing anymore videos because once I upload them to youtube they look like crap.

Looks like I will be out hunting elk again (my bro has one more tag to fill) either tomorrow or Friday, so if I don’t post you know why :).

My buddy ORION MACHINE posted a video today explaining why traders fail, and I wanted to share it with you. I also put the video on the “My General Trading Rules” page (see link under “My strategies”).

Trades for 12-29-08

Talking with my dad today made me realize that I need to be looking for more opportunities, and I’m pigeonholing myself with trading only the Q’s. So I decided to start looking at other stocks/ETFs, and from now on the “QQQQ 5M” will now be known as “Discretionary trading”.

Santa’s unauthorized entry into our air space

Santa entered our air space with out approval, so we had to take out one of his reindeer (yes we shot an elk, but I thought it would make a funny title :P). We left the house yesterday (Christmas Eve) at about 10:30am, and made it down to the town near are area to hunt at about 2:00pm. Stopped at a gas station, and while my dad was standing in line the clerk saw his cameo and asked “what ya lookin for?” He said “elk,” and a couple of guys standing in line said they had seen some outside of town to the east. So we headed out there to check it out, and took our 1st batch of photos:

Once we made it to the area they were talking about, we noticed a lot of tracks and saw some deer. The only problem was that the area was covered in ranches (private land) so we decided to leave and go to the area we were originally going to hunt. On the way out we spotted some elk on a ranch, so we looked around for the ranch owner for about 15min-30mins. We couldn’t find the owner so we left to go to our original area. Once we made it there we parked the snowmobiles and drove up the road a little ways. About ¾ of a mile up the road we saw some elk, so we hopped out of the car to go after them, but they must have saw us because they ran off. So we jump back in the car and drive around for a little longer. We end up going up the road where we shot our elk last year, and we spot another herd of elk. This time they don’t see us (if they did they didn’t care), so me and my little bro get out of the car and head after them. We had to hurry because it was getting close to sundown. Once we get about 400 yards away, I set my little bro up to take his shot using my shoulder for a gun rest (kneeling). He takes the shot and misses, but my dad says on the radio “go after them, they stopped!” So we start running (more like jogging because of the snow and gear we had on), and close in to about 300-350yards away. Sucking wind like a mofo, I told my bro to take his time and catch his breath because now he had to take a standing shot off the shooting sticks. He squeezes the round off, and I look to see the elk drop! Once we got closer to her he had to put another one in her because she was still kicking. Then the fun (work) began, but thankfully we had the snowboiles to drag her out with :). Ended up getting home at around midnight, but we got it done. Here are the photos, and video of the elk:

Trades for 12-23-08, and weekly total

I’m going back out elk hunting tomorrow, so you will probably not hear from me until the 28th. Have a merry Christmas everyone (yes I said “merry Christmas” and not “happy holidays :P)!

My total for this week is nothing because I paper-traded.

Trades for 12-22-08

I ended up deciding to can trading QQQQ on a 1 minute chart because it didn’t meet my goals. So now I’m back to trading QQQQ on a 5 minute chart, and I will paper-trade it until at least next Monday. I decided to go with paper-trading it because of the short holiday week. I may dive into trading it next Monday, but right now I’m not sure.

Today I did good. I think I am now fully out of my mental rut, too bad it’s a short trading week :(. I jumped out of the 3rd trade because it had gone flat for too long, the 1st trade I tightened my gain by $.02, and the 2nd trade hit my initial stopgain. I’m glad I got out of the 3rd trade when I did because my internet crashed on me shortly after my exit.

Trades for 12-19-08, and weekly total

My total for the week (12-15-08 to 12-19-08) is nothing, I had no real trades.

I will make my decision on whether or not I will continue trading QQQQ on a 1 minute chart over the weekend and let you know what I decide on Monday.

Check out this guy’s video channel on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/orionmachine, I ran into him through posting comments on the “Forex Intraday Trading” blog. I also added the link to the “educational links” section for future reverence.

My dad was on the phone today with a friend from his work. We were talking about gapers, and I told him I’d post the links to where I get my gapers list from so the following links are for him or whoever would like to use them to get a gapers list pre-market open.

Trades for 12-17-08

Looks like I will be paper-trading for the rest of the month like I had originally planed. No chart (again) today, I will make one for tomorrow’s trades though.

The trades posted for QQQQ 1M are up until I “stopped trading,” which means that had I been trading for real I would have stopped trading. The reason I would have stopped trading is because things weren’t clicking for me today and I had a bad feeling about continuing to trade. However, I continued paper-trading because I wanted to record what would have happened had I ignored my instinct. If I had ignored my instinct I would of ended my day (-2.11%). This has happened before to me (I just didn’t post it on this blog), so when I go back to trading for real I plan on obeying my instinct when it tells me to stop trading for the day.

Trades for 12-11-08

I sat down last night and searched for my problem. I found it to be having too much going on right now which is putting a drag on my mental ability to trade. I just piled the workload on with testing too many strategies, so I decided to put trading on hold until I clear my head. For today and tomorrow I will be paper-trading something I need to test in real time anyways, which is trading QQQQ on a 1 minute chart. I won’t be looking at anything else (10k, a 5 minute QQQQ trade, etc.) so that I can clear my head.

Sorry I took so long to post, I left early to blow off some steam ice-fishing. Needless to say I’m disappointed in my performance today. Debating on throwing QQQQ 5M away, I’ll let you know if I do tomorrow.

Today I think my problem was trading too much. I also think I was used to trading outside of ranges, and now that we have been in a range this week I’m lost. But I really don’t know for sure, so if any of you readers see something that I’m not seeing you’re more then welcome to let me know.

I think I may have figured out why I’m not doing as good trading QQQQ 5M real vs. paper. It’s because I find myself looking at how much I might loose, instead of looking for the gain and the likelihood of it being correct. Notice that I improved once I realized what I was doing.

Trades for 12-8-08

Crappy day today, 1st day trading QQQQ 5M and it’s a loss. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I had not gotten stopped out at the 9:35am bar (see chart), and faked into a short. The problem with today was the flatness in NASDAQ, and QQQQ, it just plain threw me off my game.

My totals for the week (12-1-08 to 12-5-08) are:
10k: (-.76%) or (-$214.65)
QQQQ 5M (paper-trading): (+3.55%)

Nice rally, especially on crappy jobs data. S&P500 and the Q’s are starting to break trend on their daily charts. Even though I didn’t have any trades today, I was really happy with avoiding a loss in WFT. It set up almost perfectly for a short, but I had such a strong feeling that we hit bottom for the time being that I decided to not trade it. The other thing that was cool was the NYSE rang the opening bell at beaver creek ski resort, which is about a 45min drive from where I live :). It’s an awesome place to ski, if you ever take a winter vacation to Colorado check it out.

I have started a new poll and will have it running over the weekend. I won’t base my decision on the poll (I’ll have that done tonight :Þ), I’m just curious to see what you all think about QQQQ 5M :).
